Accelerometers sensor in mobile phones are used to detect the orientation of the phone. 

A good accelerometer perfectly senses the change in orientation by 3D (X, Y, Z, axis) measurement of the acceleration in a smartphone. 

The accelerometer sensor is used to ensure video/image are presented in the correct way, portrait or landscape, depending on the way the phone is held.

You have seen auto rotate mode in every mobile phones. This auto rotate mode works by accelerometers sensor.

Actually smart phone with accelerometer is nothing but a circuit based on MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical System) - that senses or measures the forces of acceleration that may be caused due to gravity of movement or tilting action. if it is employed in mobile, it will do accordingly. It also senses the angle at which it is being held via mobile phone.
